The quiet Osaka detour you didn’t know you needed 🇯🇵 🍃

Hi Reader,

We have been to Osaka 6 times now, and this trip we carved out half a day for a little escape: Katsuoji Temple and Minoh Falls.

Totally different vibes, but together they made for a calm, nature-filled break from the city.

If you want all of our Osaka recommendations, here’s our previous issue with handpicked spots, where we stayed, and extra tips for making the most of your time in Osaka.

Stop 1: Katsuoji — The Temple of Victory and Luck

Just an hour from Osaka by subway and bus, Katsuoji is known across Japan as the place to pray for winning luck in work, business, health, romance, and personal challenges.

You will see hundreds of bright red Kachi-Daruma (good luck dolls) scattered across the grounds. People write their wishes on the back before taking one home.

A few tips:

  • Allow 1–2 hours to explore, and wear comfortable shoes
  • Do not miss getting your temple stamp if you collect them

Stop 2: Minoh Falls — Nature’s Oxygen Tank

From Katsuoji, you can take a taxi directly to Minoh Falls. Google Maps also shows other public transportation options.

It is an easy 3km hiking trail with cherry blossoms in spring, fiery momiji leaves in autumn, and plenty of shade in summer. Along the way:

  • Food stalls with decent ramen
  • A quirky insectarium with all kinds of bugs and interesting facts
  • The main event: the waterfall with a refreshing mist

It is not too close to the city, but that is the point. You get quiet, fresh air, and a slower pace before heading back into Osaka’s energy.

Travel Note: Summer in Japan

Right now, Osaka and most of Japan is very hot. Between the heat, earthquakes, and flooding, summer might not be the best time to visit (in my opinion).

If you would like to know our favorite times to visit Japan and why, just reply “Best Time to Travel To Japan”. If enough people ask, we will put together a full guide.
